Title: Structural and functional brain MRI markers for neurodegenerative diseases: multi-site reliability and evaluations on amnestic mild cognitive impaired subjects

Abstract: Presently, there is no effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a condition that is rapidly increasing and has enormous costs to society. The search for new treatments may be accelerated if we improve our understanding of disease progression through reliable, specific and easy to acquire biomarkers, especially for the asymptomatic phases of AD. I will present data from the PharmaCog project, a European consortium that is characterizing the progression of 150 amnestic mild cognitive impaired subjects through a rich variety of cognitive, CSF, EEG and brain MRI studies. I will focus on the efforts to characterize the reliability of the MRI derived metrics for a multi-centric longitudinal study (morphometry, diffusion and intrinsic connectivity). I will argue that a calibrated acquisition protocol can give reliable metrics across MR sites. I will also present preliminary patient data, pooled across the consortium, correlating MRI-derived metrics with amyloid-beta.
